GCSE Maths, Foundation and Higher

In short: GCSE Maths is sat at one of two tiers. Foundation covers grades 1 to 5, Higher covers grades 4 to 9. Most students who need a standard pass aim for grade 4 or 5, which is a Foundation target; students aiming for grade 6 and above sit Higher. Good preparation is about understanding the topics that keep tripping a student up, not piling on more worksheets. Our self-study courses are in development, so for now we help through one-to-one tuition with Tracy and a set of free resources.

Foundation or Higher?

The right tier depends on the target grade and how secure the basics are:

Choosing tier too early, or too high, is a common cause of lost confidence. If you are unsure, our guide walks through the decision: Foundation or Higher GCSE Maths: how to choose.

Understanding first, then practice

A student who says they “can’t do maths” has usually lost confidence after a run of small gaps, not run out of ability. The fix is to find the specific missing steps and rebuild from there, then practise. That is the approach Tracy teaches with: calm, structured, and paced to the learner in front of her.

Free practice sites such as Corbett Maths, Maths Genie and Dr Frost are genuinely useful for drilling topics once a student knows what to work on. They pair well with structured teaching that decides what to work on in the first place.

Common questions

Does my child need a tutor to pass GCSE Maths?

Not always. Some students do well with structured self-study and good practice. A tutor helps most when confidence has dropped or the gaps are hard to pin down.

Foundation or Higher, which should my child sit?

Foundation for a grade 4 or 5 target, Higher for grade 6 and above. Our decision guide covers the detail.

Which exam boards does this cover?

GCSE Maths content is common across AQA, Edexcel and OCR. Exam-paper style varies a little by board, so we prepare for the content and the technique.

Is the self-study course available yet?

Not yet. It is in development, for release towards the end of the year, and we will not sell it until it is finished. Register your interest and we will tell you when it is ready.

Is this a GCSE qualification?

No. It is teaching and preparation. The qualification comes from sitting the exam with an exam board.
