GCSE Maths for Home Educators

In short: you do not have to be the maths teacher to home-educate GCSE Maths. Your job is to keep the structure and protect confidence; the teaching, whether a course, a tutor or a textbook, does the maths. Your child then sits GCSE Maths as a private candidate at an exam centre. Our self-study home-ed course is in development, so for now we help through one-to-one tuition and free resources, and you can register interest in the course and its family pricing.

You do not have to teach it yourself

This is the worry we hear most, and it is a fair one: many home-educating parents are not confident with GCSE-level maths, and that is fine. The parent facilitates, keeps the routine, and spots when something is not landing. The teaching provides the explanations and the practice. Splitting those two jobs takes the pressure off the kitchen table.

For the parent side of that, our guide helps: How to teach GCSE Maths when you hated maths at school.

How a home-educated child sits GCSE Maths

Home-educated learners sit the exam as private candidates:

  1. Choose an exam board and find a centre that accepts private candidates.
  2. Book the place ahead of the entry deadline.
  3. Prepare for the three papers, one non-calculator and two calculator.
  4. Sit the papers at the centre and receive the result.

Finding and booking a centre is the part that catches families out, so we wrote it up: GCSE Maths exam centre booking for home educators.

Evidence of learning

If you record progress for a local authority, structured teaching gives you something concrete to show: topics covered, completed units, practice results, and the discussion points you have worked through together. It turns “we did some maths” into a clear record.

Common questions

Can my child sit GCSE Maths without being in school?

Yes, as a private candidate at an exam centre that accepts them.

Does this course enter my child for the exam?

No. You book the exam entry with a centre yourself. We prepare your child for it.

How do I find an exam centre?

Our exam-centre booking guide walks through it. Book early, as centres fill for the summer series.

What if I cannot teach GCSE Maths myself?

That is the point of structured teaching. You facilitate; the course or tutor teaches.

Can siblings or a co-op share access?

Family and co-op pricing is planned for the self-study course, which is for release towards the end of the year. Register your interest and we will tell you the details when it launches.
